Village Canopies
Valparai, India (2025)
Lion-tailed macaques are arboreal monkeys, but with deforestation & encroaching settlements, the monkeys must look for new canopies. From pipes as trunks to roofs as tree tops, these endangered monkeys are adapting alongside their human and bonnet macaque primates in the villages.
arrested Autonomy (film)
Bolivia (2024)
Following Ñoqui, Cesar, and Ness, three spider monkeys caught between captivity and freedom, Arrested Autonomy explores the fragile bonds formed in the space between rescue and release. Here are select photos from the associated film.
Lara walks through the jungle 7 hours a day, monitoring the rescued babies as they integrate with the semi-wild group.
Taïmu is one of the few baby monkeys at the center who will live out his life from birth to adulthood free in the wild. His mother, Mika, was rescued and released by ONCA rescue center.
Sustenance and Exploitation
Ifaty, Madagascar (2022)
For this Malagasy village, survival looks like hunting for endangered sea turtles, spear fishing fish of any size, and depleting coral reefs to delight Hong Kong’s lavish tastes.
Malagasy fisherman handcraft their boats with whatever materials they can gather. Sometimes this includes the wooden sticks unwinding in the open sea, requiring fishers to jump in and retie the knots.
The boats do not have motors, relying on the fisher's paddling strength and knowledge of the ocean's current.
Along the Malagasy coasts, men teach themselves to free dive, hunting for anything that could possible be eaten— from sea turtles, to coral fish, to sea cucumbers.
The sea cucumber (left) will be sold to international markets with most profits being left to middlemen, while the fish (right) will be consumed locally due to limited food.
While sea cucumbers are used for international trade, sea turtles are hunted locally for sustenance. Sea turtles are endangered here, but the locals have little other choices for food.
The entire body of the sea turtle is consumed leaving behind the less useful shells. Along the village, shells are scattered aimlessly or used as toys by the children.
Sea turtle hunting is known to be illegal in Madagascar, but sustenance takes priority over the law.
Foragers to Beggars
Batu Caves, Malaysia (2026)
In Hindu mythology, Hanuman resembles the monkey body, manifesting in visitors feeding monkeys. What appears like kindness is a perpetual humanization that leads to human-monkey conflict, poor diet for monkeys, and potential spread of zoonotic diseases.
The Hanuman statue stands 15 meters, overlooking the human and monkey interactions below.

Encroaching Settlements
Islamabad, Pakistan (2025,2026)
Rhesus macaques are watching their forest habitats be destroyed by urban sprawl and rampant deforestation around Pakistan’s capital.
Protections may extend to the land of the Margala Hills, but they do not reach the wildlife. Direct feeding and pollution leaves these monkeys obese and foraging amongst trash. [Sign in Image: "Keep the Parks Clean"]
